GOLDEN. Metacanthina barrandea Fossil Trilobite. Plus one Anthrozoa (Rugosa) Fossil Coral.
    Devonian, Casablanca Plateau, Morocco.

Restoration details: No reconstruction at all. Untouched plate at both sides.

    Dimensions: Specimen (trilobite): 6,7 x 5,4 cm; Matrix: 16,3 x 11,2 cm.

    Weight: 501 g.

    Finding locality: Casablanca plateau, Morocco.

Species: Specimen 1 (trilobite):Metacanthina barrandea; Family: Acastidea; Order: Phacopida; Class: Trilobita.
Specimen 2 (coral): Unidentified species; Order Rugosa; Class Anthrozoa.

Geological period: Devonian, from Paleozoic Era.

A perfect example of a true Metacanthina barrandea from Morocco. Beautiful eyes facets and perfect exoskeleton.

Trilobites from these layers are characterized by a diagenetic mineralization in which the exoskeleton is replaced by beautiful yellowish/golden iron minerals (limonite). When the fossil is buried, wisps of pyrite form in the pores within the skeletal calcite. When vadose water dissolves the calcite, the oxygen dissolved in the water reacts with the pyrite, converting it in the colourful iron oxide. A pragmatical sample of the fossilization process!

The top of a solitary rugose coral emerges in layered at the plate. Class Anthozoa, Order Rugosa. Genus is difficult or impossible to determine. It shows the complexity of the associated fauna inhabiting the seas at Devonian times. Also golden mineralized.
